On the first conference day, Wednesday, September 21st, 2022 panel discussion ‘Smart university for smart industry’ will be held by chair Full Prof. Blaženka Divjak, Ph.D. from the Faculty of Organization and Informatics, University of Zagreb.
The current technological, societal and educational advancements have provided grounds for development of universities which make use of fascinating and powerful technologies, and engaging contemporary approaches to teaching and learning. Today’s smart universities take advantage of the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, learning analytics, cloud computing, big data, design thinking, blockchain technology and other state-of-the-art developments.
But what is actually smart about these universities? In particular, universities 4.0 introduce smart curricula, based on student-centered learning design, innovative pedagogies and various modes of delivery, including hybrid and blended, as well as augmented reality, that combine cyber and physical. They also conduct smart research and provide outreach, based on human-centered and participatory design, collaboration with smart industry and integration of smart campuses into smart cities. In smart campuses, education is not limited strictly to classrooms, libraries and labs, but exploits the exciting opportunities enabling their students to learn and collaborate anywhere.
Smart resources needed for smart universities include advanced infrastructure and high connectivity that support the meaningful implementation of intelligent data management, analytics and computational capability, as well as the training of students and staff. Smart universities require smart leadership, minding various ethical concerns, including those related to digital humans. Finally, there is no smart university without smart teachers, proficient in data literacy, learning analytics and innovative pedagogies. No university, and especially a smart university, is an island, and smart universities should be discussed in the light of their contribution to the overall society of today, as well as the smart industry.
In this context, the panelists will be invited to share their visions of smart universities. They will also discuss the position of smart universities in relation to industry in terms of new, AI-related technologies, as well as opportunities, benefits and challenges, and the contribution of smart universities to the society and industry.
Full Prof. Blaženka Divjak, Ph.D.
Prof. Blaženka Divjak is a Full professor at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Organization and Informatics. Her current research interests are curriculum development, e-learning, assessment of learning outcomes, learning analytics, quality culture in higher education and many others.
Full Prof. Victoria Appatova, Ph.D.
Prof. Victoria Appatova is a Professor of Reading/English at the University of Cincinnati-Clermont College and Academic Coordinator of the College Success Program. Her current research interests are disciplinary literacy, college success programs, effective learning, and many others.

Goran Kanižaj is the CEO of MOBILISIS d.o.o. (SICK AG). Mobilisis is developing a segment of specialized electronic equipment with a significant share of innovation, design and development intended primarily for the M2M and IoT markets.
Full Prof. Nenad Medvidović, Ph.D.
Prof. Nenad Medvidovic is the Director Emeritus of the Center for Systems and Software Engineering and a Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Southern California. His current research interests are in the area of architecture-based software development.
Full Prof. Wim Van Petegem, Ph.D.
Prof. Wim Van Petegem is a Professor at KU Leuven and senior researcher at LINOV. His current research interests are new educational technology, networked e-learning, lifelong learning, and many others.
Full Prof. Bart Rienties, Ph.D.
Prof. Bart Rienties is a Professor of Learning Analytics at the Institute of Educational Technology at the Open University UK. His current research interests are learning analytics, learning design, computer-supported collaborative learning, and many others.
Danny Gooris
Mr. Danny Gooris is Program Director at Oracle Academy EMEA. He has more than 20 years of experience managing vendor-led technology education programs. Before joining Oracle in 2013, mr. Goory was the EMEA Program Leader at Learning@Cisco. He also worked with Ministries of Education around the world, from Eastern Europe and Central Asia to Africa. Danny’s global experience contributes to his passion; ensuring that young people develop the skills they need to become leaders and entrepreneurs of the future. He also participates in and contributes to EU initiatives, like European Union Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs and the European e-Skills Association.
