Meet the Keynote Speakers

Jan Mendling 

Jan Mendling is a Full Professor at the Institute for Information Business at Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Austria. His research interests include business process management and information systems. He has published more than 400 research papers and articles, among others in the Journal of the Association of Information Systems, ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology, IEEE Transaction on Software Engineering, Information Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, and Decision Support Systems. He is a board member of the Austrian Society for Process Management, one of the founders of the Berliner BPM-Offensive, and a member of the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining. He is a co-author of the textbooks Fundamentals of Business Process Management and Wirtschaftsinformatik.

ABSTRACT:

Business process management is a prolific field of research and an area of strong industrial uptake with roots in both management and information systems engineering. Traditionally, business process management has largely been utilized in an inward-looking way with the aim to improve operations, eliminate waste, and increase efficiency. Recent developments around digital innovation revive ideas of process reengineering with a strong emphasis on the external market and exploration. In this talk, I will discuss the complementaries of both, building on arguments from an upcoming paper by Mendling, Pentland and Recker in EJIS.

Josep M. Duart

Full professor in Psychology and Educational Sciences Department at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC)

Dr Duart holds a doctorate (PhD) in Pedagogy from Ramon Llull University (URL), Barcelona, and a Master in Business Administration from ESADE Business School, Barcelona. Since 1996 is full professor in Psychology and Educational Sciences Department at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). He has been involved in several positions: Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Lifelong Learning, and former Director of the International Graduate Institute at the Open University of Catalonia, UOC (2007-2013), and Director of the UNESCO Chair in e-Learning (2002-2009). Currently, he teaches on education and technology field, educational models and quality and is member of the Open Evidence Research Group. As a researcher specialising in Educational Technology, e-learning models and educational organisation, he leads and collaborates on research projects in areas such as educational policy, higher education leadership and ICT use. He has published several books and a range of co-authored articles in international specialist journals (ORCID). He has also given lectures on ICTs in higher education at international conferences and European, American and Australian universities. He is the Editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education (JCR Q2; Scopus Q2), Vice President of Research of the European Distance Education and E-learning Network (EDEN), and founder member and coordinator of “The Universitity of the Future Network”. He is also founder member and coordinator of Red Universitaria para la Educación con Tecnología (REDUNETE). Dr Duart has been involved in several research and collaboration projects with European and Latin American universities and education quality assurance strategies consultancies with Latin American governments (Colombia, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina and others).
