Smart industry was the topic of this year’s panel discussion at CECIIS 2021 where the need for further research in this area was recognized. Modern society faces many challenges that stretch its capabilities to survive and further develop. When on the one hand we witness tremendous scientific progress, we face obstacles and limitations to maintain sustainable future on the other. Some of the global challenges include climate change, depletion of natural resources and degraded air and water quality. Concurrently, the local challenges we face become important for distribution of economic power in the future world. Covid-19 related crisis showed that western economy is heavily dependent on production in the East Asia and global logistics. Decades of deindustrialization, outsourcing and similar business logic have now shown that many countries cannot sustain any serious stress test. That is why the paradigm began to change and the next few decades could bring industry and production back to western sphere. This will be the industry based on modern technologies and the concept of smartness which will include the intensive use of artificial intelligence, robotics, and connectivity accompanied with new business models. We are facing new industrial and social changes which will coherently lead to new industrial revolution. This process will not be easy and there are many open questions. CECIIS 2022 will address some of them and we invite authors to contribute with their research to this exciting topic.
